Good People: My Lucky $100 Bill From Oregon

by Jon Katz

I got this wonderful bit of mail this morning from Beaver Creek, a small town in Oregon. It  was from a blog reader named Chris Fowler and he sent me a lovely letter and his personal “Lucky $100 bill.

The money now resides in my wallet, and will remain there.

Chris wrote: “Enclosed you will find my “Lucky $100” – I keep one folded up in my wallet for the occasion that I might one day need it, or someone else might.

You can do whatever you wish with it – but it was the loss of your computer that inspired me to pass this “Lucky 100″ on to you. Thanks for all you do – but it is your writing that grips me, and so often connects me to exactly what I need to read. A loyal reader from Oregon.”

It’s a bit miraculous to me, I’ve never met Chris or heard from him before, and I doubt I will ever meet him or even speak with him.

Yet he’s taking the trouble to send  me his lucky $100 bill and Chris, I put it in my wallet right away, and I hope it stays there forever, unless I really need it or somebody else really needs it.

It is my great wish that my writing connects with people in that way, rather than annoys and provokes them, although that can be valuable as well.

Chris, you are a good and generous person and your remind me once again to not despair about the struggles raging all around us.

Blessings to you and yours, you are thousands of miles away yet it feels like you are sitting right here with my in my office.

I promise to honor the spirit of generosity you have offered me. Thanks for the note and the lucky money. I’ll do right by it.

  1. I just love that messages like this come to you from my wonderful state. I wish you and Maria could come to Oregon, Bend in particular, and maybe give a talk or something so we could all meet you. Wouldn’t that be wonderful. You would love Oregon. It is an enchanted place. The Chinese believe that the color red is the color of abundance and good luck. Find a piece of red paper, maybe origami paper, and wrap it around your lucky $100.00 to boost the good energy. I thank you also for all you do. Zinnia is a winner. So nice to have her on the Army of Good team. Have a Blessed Day!!!!

  2. My elderly neighbor gave me a $2 bill for walking his dog and I was going to keep it for good luck. But, I love the idea of passing it on to someone in need. I see a homeless woman at the bus transfer station almost every day. She’ll get it Monday….

  3. Wow…that is totally awesome! And all the way from the West Coast! I am so happy to read that your mishaps hopefully are coming to an end, and love hearing about Zinnia. Hope you and Maria are in good health these days? Sending good wishes from Mass. Take care.
