Maria started working on Doily Woman on the day we put our oldest sheep Zelda down. Zelda was a strong woman. Maria loved her posture and her bearing.
She is on sale now, strong woman to strong woman.
Strong women through time represent the idea behind this very striking and original work. A delicate, fussy creation, re-imagined and re-adopted for another purpose.
I think it’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime creations, I may not ever see another one like it.
Maria looked around her studio that day and saw a bunch of old doilies, once one of the few things creative women were permitted to make or sell not too long ago.
Maria feels close to those early artists, she always imagines that she might have been one of them.
So she went to work on Doily Woman, for her a powerful connection to the past and a strong symbol of somen today.
She has always seen this Zelda as strong (note the subtle butterfly around the vulva.)
Her doily woman, a fiber painting and one of her most interesting creations, was sold instantly. But that sale fell through.
A blog reader said she loved it and wanted to buy it for sure. Yesterday, she messaged Maria to say her financial situation had changed and she couldn’t buy Zelda.
Maria understands problems like that, she’s been there. She is a very strong woman herself.
This fiber painting is a statement, connecting then and now. I am excited about it.
Maria is putting her Doily Woman up for sale today, via e-mail – [email protected] – or on her Etsy Page. A second chance for somebody.
You can read about this version of Zelda on Maria’s blog.
