Robin As Growling Stegosaurus

by Jon Katz

The Stegosaurus costume I sent Robin for Halloween seemed to work beautifully in her vast Brooklyn apartment building, where resident children stalk the halls with buckets.

I also sent her a Wicked Witch Of The East costume but it was too big, maybe next year.

Emma reports that as of this writing, Robin is crying in bed because there is no Halloween tomorrow. But her trick-or-treating was a huge success, except she hasn’t yet come down from a serious sugar high.

Emma said that Robin has been practicing growling as Steogsauruses are reported to have done. When people gave her candy she roared at them, it was very impressive and there were many compliments on the costume.

I have a good record of sending children gifts that they like, perhaps because the child in me still lives. I like that I could contribute to Halloween even though we are hundreds of miles away.

If I were there in Brooklyn, I would sit down with her and turn down the lights and tell her a scary story that isn’t scary.  Then I would tell her that in her mind, Halloween can come anytime she wants. She can do it in her head, she doesn’t need a costume.

She can do it in pictures, and words and dreams. Emma said she had a great time and loved the costume.

  1. Robin makes a serious looking Stegosaurus. The growl probably sounded great over the phone. She looks like she is really getting big. She definitely has outgrown the baby stage. How old is she?

  2. I have to say it, “Do you know how many stegosauruses you have killed because of that costume!?!”
    (“steogauri” maybe?)

Happy Halloween, Jon, and Joyous Grandparenting. I love reading about Robin. I’m pre-schooler-starved.
