My Angel At Sunrise. Celestial Musings

by Jon Katz

I came downstairs this morning and my new angel was waiting for me on the dining room table, the sun was just coming up and lit him up like some omen. There’s a lot of juice coming off of that guy if that’s what he is.

There is really no way to know who this angel is supposed to be, the sender was anonymous and is remaining silent.

There are hundreds of different images of Michael online, and none of them look like this. But then, as Maria pointed out, most famous images of angels were painted by men, many of them gay, hundreds of years ago.

Michael gets by far the most votes from my readers, I’ll go with it. Michael got into my head for sure, and I’m trying to work out why he is here.

I came across this writing about angels, it’s from Lang Leave, who wrote a book called Love and Misadventure. It was so much out of my life it brought chills:

One day you meet someone and for some inexplicable reason, you feel more connected to this stranger than anyone else–closer to them than your closest family. Perhaps this person carries within them an angel–one sent to you for some higher purpose; to teach you an important lesson or to keep you safe during a perilous time. What you must do is trust in them–even if they come hand in hand with pain or suffering–the reason for their presence will become clear in due time.”

Though here is a word of warning–you may grow to love this person but remember they are not yours to keep. Their purpose isn’t to save you but to show you how to save yourself. And once this is fulfilled; the halo lifts and the angel leaves their body as the person exits your life. They will be a stranger to you once more.”

No other person is mine to keep, and that is not something I would ever want. But that doesn’t mean they have to go away, either. I like this thought. And I must confess, Red and dogs came to mind as much as people.

Rainer Maria Rilke, the poet of creativity, wrote that every angel is terrifying, I can see that.

In his solitude, Saint Anthony wrote that he sometimes encountered devils who looked like angels, and other times he found angels who looked like devils. When asked how he could tell the difference, the saint said that you can only tell which is which by the way you feel after the creature has left your company.

I like that too. You can’t have a healthy relationship with an unhealthy person. Angels feel nourishing and uplifting, they don’t leave you feeling anxious or belittled or confused.

William Blake wrote that he was “walking among the fires of Hell, delighted with the enjoyments of Genius, which to Angels look like torment and insanity.”

Good stuff to think about. Maybe that’s why he’s here.
