A Donkeys Gaze

by Jon Katz

After the shearing, Fanny and Lulu stood for the longest time near Red’s grave and looked out over the pasture. Donkeys are guard animals, and they are always vigilant, watching out for predators or dangers out in the woods.

They see and hear things we don’t see and hear – foxes, coyotes, fishers – and watch them closely. Donkeys love hills with vantage points. They have a strong and distinct gaze, there is something iconic and timeless about it.
