Sweet Sunday Afternoon

by Jon Katz

There are three things Maria loves to do. Eat Mexican Food. Go to see art in a museum. Have ice cream on a beautiful sunny day.

Largely because of her, I love to do those three things also. She has turned me onto museums as well as Mexican food, and I didn’t need anybody to help me love ice cream.

We got to do all of these things today, it was yet another gorgeous, nearly perfect Autumn Day.

The trees are in a full-color riot, there was a breeze.

First, we blogged, of course. She worked on her Doily-Woman, and I wrote a few things.

We stopped at Tony’s first, for some Shrimp and Chicken Tostado’s, which were great. Maria was happy and full. Me too.

We went first to the Williams College Museum of Art in Williamstown, we checked out the museum renovation and were especially drawn to a new exhibit called Axis Mundo, Queer Networks in Chicano L.A.

The exhibit focuses on gay Chicano artists in and their artistic collaborators from the late 1960’s to the early 1990s, a period of intense and sometimes tragic dramas upheavals, and inspiring political activism.

The artists experimented across a very wide and diverse variety of media – painting, performance, photography, video, fashion, music, even mail art.

It was an exciting and challenging exhibit, we spent more than an hour there. Then we headed down the street to a used Libary bookstore to get some large print books and crossword puzzles for the Mansion.

We stopped on the way home for some ice cream and then went grocery shopping. I am in love with my Apple Pay, it takes about two seconds to buy something, there is no plastic card or paper.

On the way back, I stopped a few times to take some photos. I love watching Maria in a museum, checking out exhibits with an artist is very different than going by myself. I loved this image of her reflected in the glass of a big painting.

When I got home I was wrecked. Fate ran into my knee early this morning out in the pasture

This is something we share and love to do together. I am not an artist, but I see art in a very different way.

  1. This is such a good picture. I’m not an artist I don’t claim to know or understand art but that picture of Maria has a Edward Hopper quality to it. Beautiful.
