Mary At The Tag Sale

by Jon Katz

Our little town had a town-side Tag Sale on Sunday, people had stuff out on their lawns all day. The Methodist Church on Main Street had a huge tag sale inside to benefit the Food Pantry just down the block.

Maria was the cashier/volunteer on duty and I just loved her face and wanted to do her portrait. She was shocked and hesitant and I asked her what the problem was.

She said people don’t generally ask to photographer her. I told her she had a face worthy of Mt. Rushmore, and I wasn’t kidding.

She said she wasn’t beautiful enough to be photographed, she reached over and invited a young girl to sit with her, to “balance out things,” she said. I loved this image of old and young just as well, two faces, each beautiful in their own way.

Mary asked me what the photo was for, and I said it was for my blog. Okay, she said, but what is a blog?
