Portrait. Socks: Do We Need More Sheep?

by Jon Katz

Liz, our shearer, has offered to give us two of her prized wool sheep for free when she comes to shear our sheep on October 20. We’ve been talking about this all morning.

This is really Maria’s decision, she is excited about our sheep, and since Red and Zelda both died, we’ve been thinking about them and the role she plays in our lives and Maria’s future.

We’re going to do a podcast on the subject over the weekend. I have mixed feelings about it, Maria’s art has really taken off, and I admit I am thinking ahead to the day when I’m not here.

Does she really want all of those animals to care for by herself? On the other hand, neither of us really thinks that way. We both want to get Zinnia the puppy in November.

The wool and the yarn connect Maria to the natural world and the life of the farm.

She loves shearing, taking the wool to a mill, figuring out how to sell the yarn, and then selling it. She put 90 skeins of wool up for sale, and only two are left on her Etsy Shop.

With Red gone, we are both getting to know the sheep better and paying closer attention to them. And several of our sheep are old and won’t be here long.

Maria is getting more and more attached to them, and they to her.

Maria has drawn much closer to the sheep and is intrigued by the idea of getting two wool sheep free. So we’ll be talking about this a lot this weekend. Maria very much wants to stay on this farm, and I very much hope she can. We have to figure out how the sheep fit in.

  1. You won’t be marrying the sheep. Just sayin’! If they don’t work out. But then you know how much I LOVE Maria’s wool.

    1. It’s up to her, Susie, if she says she wants them, they’ll come, and I am not yet sure about it, for whatever that’s worth. We’re having good conversations about it.

  2. Jon, with all respect, isn’t this a “don’t buy green bananas’ reaction? If Maria can handle the new sheep, why not? If it doesn’t work out, then both of you can find another way forward. ?

    1. Not sure what the green bananas reaction is. It’s up to Maria whether or not we get the sheep, not me. I don’t tell her what to do. Getting more animals is a big deal to me, and I always like to think it through. We are both plenty buy and I don’t think a decision like this should be made without some thought, for the animal’s sake as well as ours. We know our options, and it’s her call. I will continue to think about and give my opinion when asked. You act as if I’ve made up my mind, I haven’t.

  3. I wish every human being would think like this before getting an animal…..”I don’t think a decision like this should be made without some thought, for the animal’s sake as well as ours.”

  4. You’d really only be adding one sheep to the flock since Zelda is now gone, plus who knows how long Griselle will be able to hang in there. Maria seems so comfortable and loving around the sheep and I know she’ll make the right decision for her. The wool is spectacular! I guess she’ll have to weigh the pros and cons.
