Autumn, The Back Porch

by Jon Katz

The back porch reflects our lives as well as anything on Bedlam Farm. In the cold weather, the two solitary and imperious barn cats snuggle up. The hanging plants begin to fate. Leaves fall off of the roof. And Bud poses with the barn cats for a rare communal photo.

The porch speaks of where we are in the seasons, and in a way, in our lives. In previous years, we would both be frantic preparing for our Open Houses. In some ways, we will miss the Open Houses, but in other ways, it’s a relief. We both are busier than ever and also more productive.

I accept the patterns and rhythms of life. Everything is a gift. Whenever I need to ground myself, I look at the back porch, it tells me where we are.

  1. Love your country back porch – and made extra special by Bud and the cats being in the picture. I’m sure it’s a relief not to have to prepare for Open House, but I regret that I was never able to experience one on Bedlam Farm. What a treat that would have been for me.
