Epic Struggle: Bud And His Cheeky Chipmunk

by Jon Katz

The chipmunk in the pasture stonewall reminds me of Daffy Duck fending off Elmer Fudd. He is clearly teasing Bud by popping up here and there and sending Bud into a fierce chase back and forth in search of him.

Bud is determined, and the chipmunk is just plain cheeky. He waits for Bud to get close, pops his head up, and dives down and pops up somewhere else. It’s an epic struggle, one I suspect Bud will not ever win.

The chipmunk squeaks whenever he pops up, to taunt Bud, I think, and let him know where he is. By the time Bud gets there, the chipmunk is gone, there is clearly a system of holes and tunnels int the stone wall that the chipmunk knows well.

It’s become an epic struggle, it goes on every single morning and often in the afternoon as well. Bud shows no signs of being discouraged or frustrated, the chipmunk shows no signs of quitting.

  1. We have a baby (actually now a teenager)squirrel who lays on our grapevine fence and stares at us as we go about our business in our dining room. We have named him Tom– short for Peeping Tom. Nothing stirs him from his obsession of watching us. But the other piece in this is our dachshund/terrier mix Meg who is now aware of our Tom too. Dachshunds and terriers as you know, love to hunt and squirrel chasing is a long standing preprogrammed hobby. Tom does stir from his perch to taunt Meg and I swear we can hear him laughing at her as she races back and forth from the dining room to the living room sofas to get a higher look at him I hope he hangs around we have grown fond of Tom. Our 5 year old grandson has grown fond of him too. Not sure about Meg though…..
