Lulu’s Watching

by Jon Katz

People are often surprised to learn that donkeys are guard animals, which is the primary reason I got them. Lulu, in particular, takes responsibility for guarding the flock. When intruders approach – coyotes, stray dogs – Lulu steps between them and the danger, ears up.

Donkeys can be fierce when provoked, they bite, stomp and kick. Lulu is an especially beautiful donkey, she is always watchful and vigilant. Fanny is more of a good time charlie, she’ll drop anything for a carrot or a scratch. I liked this photo, it captured Lulu’s stateliness.

  1. Awesome photo – makes me want to hug her. I don’t guess I’ve ever seen a real donkey up close, but your pictures and stories make me want to meet some donkeys, especially Lulu and Fanny.

    1. Mary, if you’re interested in buying the photo please contact Maria [email protected], she handles photo sales. I didn’t put it up for sale but would be happy to sell it to you unframed and signed, $130…thanks for liking it..
