Podcast: Luck, Work, Puppy, Zelda, Fate

by Jon Katz

Our newest podcast focuses on the age-old question of luck versus work as the determining factor in a meaningful life.

We also talk about our decision to euthanize Zelda this week, the looming possibility of a Yellow Lab puppy named Zinnia, and the emergence of Fate – somewhat to our surprise – as an exceptionally gifted and response therapy dog.

This is an important week on Bedlam Farm, and a sobering week as well. I think the podcast reflects that well.

I always felt as if I had somehow failed Fate in her herding train, but I don’t feel that way about her therapy work. The training is going beautifully, and I am proud of me and of her.

On Wednesday of this week, a large animal vet is coming to euthanize Zelda, our oldest and smartest sheep. We are burying her in our pasture, we dug a grave on Sunday.

We talk about compassion and what it means for farm animals. Our other theme deals with the idea that we are lucky in having our farm and our lives. We somewhat object to that idea, I think we both believe that we have worked very hard for our lives and that luck has little to do with it.

But it’s not a simple topic, and luck surely plays a role in life. We kick this around as best we can. Come and listen. And thanks for listening to us.

  1. Anybody can be lucky if they’re willing to work as hard as you and Maria do. Sometimes I’m worn out just reading about what the two of you do in a single day.

  2. I admire you and Maria for your stewardship in caring for your animals. Knowing when an animal needs to be euthanized is a big decision and you both approach the decision with clarity knowing the animal. Wishing Zelda a great journey to the afterlife.
