Fate At The Gate

by Jon Katz

Whenever Fate gets to go outside (once in a while, she opens the back door and gets herself outside, thank God she hasn’t discovered power tools) and she never runs off of strays near the street.

She always goes to one place, she sits right by the gate and waits, for hours, if necessary, for somebody who might come along and open the gate. I used to think that if she wanted to get through that gate so quickly, she might one day want to herd the sheep Not yet.

Hope springs eternal, for her, for me.
