Podcast: Getting A New Dog (And Taking Donations)

by Jon Katz

New podcast. Getting A New Dog.

Red died just over a week ago, and last week, we decided to get a new dog, a Yellow Labrador puppy from a highly respected breeder in upstate New York (mother above).

The litter is due on September 20, if things work out, I could bring her home (I want a female) in November. The puppy will cost $2,500 (gulp.) I’ll be checking out the line as thoroughly as I can.

I want a sweet, gentle dog to train for therapy work.

For me, the process of getting a dog is not emotional, or moral, or simple. It takes a lot of work, homework, and thought. It’s an important decision. I never listen to people who tell me how to get a dog, or that there is only one way to get a dog. They are not my friend.

They are not minding their own business.

A new dog is an essential part of my grieving process. I’d rather train a puppy than grieve for Red for months on end.

Maria is completely on board, this is what we do, this is what I write about, this is what I love to write about. We will share the process honestly and openly, as always.

On the podcast, we also talk about Maria’s seminal decision to seek monthly donations for the work she does on her blog. She freaked out for about two weeks after she did it. You can donate to her blog here.

Come and listen to us talk about the hows and why of it. You can hear the podcast here.

  1. Red would be happy for you and Maria!! Giving love to another animal is selfless!!!! You will never replace Red…only more happy memories with a new friend!

  2. I have been a fan for years and have read every one of your books (well the sequence of books on each dog). I’m of the same mind when it comes to not grieving forever, but get another and give that dog the best life you have to offer. I am looking forward to hearing all about the new pup and it’s shenanigans, training, and therapy work. Oh, I am a lab girl and while I love all dogs (and all critters for that matter), labs are my loves. I have had 5 labs in my time and each one has brought it’s own personality, quirks, and silliness. And, of course, the love, loyalty and desire to please. Wishing you the and Maria the very best! Congratulations on your decision!! Sandi Olbrias

  3. Such a sweet, soulful look on her face. Hoping one of her pups is the one for you two. Am looking forward to following the journey.
