“Do Something:” Make A Teacher’s Dream Come True

by Jon Katz

A teacher messaged me recently to thank the Army Of Good for supporting the Bishop Maginn Amazon Teachers Wish List.  I’m leaving for Albany in a few minutes and I have a feeling this list might be sold out by the time I get there.

There were 23 items on the list two days ago, there are two now. I suspect they won’t be there for too long.

“Every good teacher has a dream,” Carol wrote me, “the dream is to touch each child in some way, to get the tools we need to do our jobs and help each child recognize their remarkableness.”

The Wish List, she said, “is making their dreams come true.”

There are two items left on the lists the teacher’s put up themselves.

There is a non-glamorous but essential Broom and Dust Pan set (the teacher’s need six of those) for $10.99 apiece and 10 copies of Hamlet (No Fear Graphic Novel) for $9.14 apiece.

First of all, thank you. We are changing lives.

I also learned that a wonderfully generous member of the Army of Good is sending Mike Tolan a $10,000 check this week for his tuition fund. This will enable some very gifted young refugee students to attend the school this coming September.

This week, the grieving citizens of the Dayton, Ohio massacre shouted at their governer to “do something,” it became a rallying cry for people all over America who want to stop the killing of innocents with lethal weaponry made for war, including children sitting at their desks.

For me, helping the teachers and the refugee children at Bishop Maginn is doing something that I can do right now. It is a response to the violence and tragedy and hatred and powerlessness many of us are feeling.

If you want to do something help the Bishop Maginn teachers help their kids, we are close to assuring that no Bishop Maginn teacher this year will need to spend their own money on art and school supplies.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but it makes me feel better, even some joy. Celebrate joy. You can see the remaining items on the list here.

I’m heading to Albany this morning to continue this work, and to meet with Principal Mike Tolan and the Silverstein Art Brigade, I’m bringing T-shirts, comic books and some art payments for Blue. I’m going to try to bring Red.

Thanks so much for your support.
