The Very Short Life Of The Hibiscus

by Jon Katz

We have a huge Hibiscus bush, and it’s an interesting bush and an interesting flower. It comes out in mid-summer and there is really no other flower like it. It kind of explodes, a big, beautiful, flappy kind of flower that lasts for three or four days, then collapses into itself, becomes just another green bush.

I took this photo with my black and white monochrome camera, and it captured the beautiful mystery of this doomed flower, so beautiful with such a short life. I love taking photos of colorful things in black and white, these photos challenge us to imagine beauty as well as see it.
