Life In Motion: Morning Chores

by Jon Katz

This photograph accidentally captures the life in motion that swirls around us whenever we go out to see or feed or check on the animals.

So much is happening here, so much is always happening out there in the pasture.

Maria is brushing Lulu, Fanny is coming over to me to demand some attention, and she and Bud are in one of their staredowns.

Fate is looking eagerly at Maria, waiting for the command she loves: “get the sheep!” As for the sheep they are right there in the Pole Barn. It seems like a lot of different things are happening there, but essentially, one thing is happening.

We are all connected to one another, aware of one another, staying near one another.

To me, this is the Peaceable Kingdom, only I have a Boston Terrier, not the most peaceable breed. Still, we all manage to get along. I’m reading a book about a suspected painting of Da Vinci I was reading that all of his paintings had motion, he didn’t just paint people starting at him.

They were moving, looking away, or in transition.

This is a lesson for me with my portraits, I want to show life and movement. A local brewery has asked if I would consider putting up a show of some of my Mansion photos. I said I’d think about it, I like the idea. Have to see what it might cost.
