The vintage hanky from 1950’s gave advice to housewives about how to keep their husbands – “never get mad,” “if they like music, you like music,” etc.
Maria’s quite astonishing new quilt has a different message, she answers this advice with biting quotes and commentary from Marge Piercey, Clarrissa Estes Pinkola, and Lizzo, the brilliantly attitudinal classical flutist and rapper.
( I very much love her new album).
In fact, the best description I can think of for Maria’s wonderful new work is brilliantly attitudinal, just like her, of course. This is a special piece of work, it took a long time and a lot of blood and sweat and creativity, but it was worth it.
The old quotes are interwoven with the new ones, an artistic and profoundly creative look at the changing story of women. I’m inspired. There is, as author Piercy says, such a thing as good and just anger.
On this Fourth Of July weekend, I see the quilt as a powerful statement in its unique way, about the independence of women. And a remember of very different times.
The quit just went up for sale for $500, plus shipping.
It is available on her Etsy Shop. I am not, of course, unbiased, but this quilt touched me quite deeply and I am an man, and an old one at that. I can only imagine how it make women feel.
This advice on the hank was a Bible for trapped women for a very long time. The revolution seems to be coming, if it isn’t already here. This quilt is a banner and a flag and a testament to new and better and very different times to come.
