Fate Eating Bud

by Jon Katz

I looked up from my book and I thought, “it looks like Fate is eating Bud.” These two are rascals, they constantly get into mischievous and torture and play with one another. Fate is not nearly as sweet as Red, she does love to play with the Hellion, her new brother.

  1. You make me laugh all the time. So funny this photo of the two Helions, kindred spirits. Thank you Jon!

  2. Heidi is an Airedale terrier and my best friend owns Bella, Heidi’s sister. As a result, the two dogs have grown up together. They are nearly five years old so they don’t play as much or as actively as in the past, but when they do play it’s very rough. They do a lot of “bitey face” play, a term familiar to Airedale owners which involves a lot of snarling, showing of teeth and grabbing each other by the neck. When the dogs were in puppy kindergarten, part of each class was off-leash play, meant to encourage socialization. Many times during the eight weeks, other owners would get upset watching Bella and Heidi together and would tell us to separate them. “They’re fighting! They’ll hurt each other!” Is what other owners would say. My friend and I, as well as the instructor, would reassure the other owners that it was just play. I think this is why so many dogs never get the chance to have doggy friends. Their owners can’t tell the difference between playing and fighting. I’m glad Heidi and Bella play with each other. It’s good exercise, they enjoy it and, let’s face it, I don’t want my dog playing bitey face with ME! ?
