Paw Lway Shee is an artist at Bishop Maginn High School. She is a refugee from Myanmar, spent years in a refugee camp. This summer, she has to take care of her siblings so that her parents can work several jobs.
She comes into the school at odd hours to work with Sue Silverstein, the art teacher. She is not able to come in the day time, when I visit, but she leaves her paintings with Sue to give to me to sell.
Her teachers believe her to be exceptionally gifted. Maria and I are trying to figure out if there is any way to have an online and gallery showing of their work at some point.
Paw Lway Shee’s striking portraits are drawn from the Karen culture she comes from. Hers is a faith that celebrates their culture with magic and ritual, in colorful dances and dress. Her paintings evoke that Karen world, she has a gift for capturing feeling and also emotion.
I am learning that creativity is a healing balm for so many of these children, so many have endured nothing less than horror. They’ve seen genocide, murder and brutal persecution, fled their homes, lived in camps, lost everything.
Creativity is often spawned in that way.
Paw Lway has sold two paintings already, a lot of people have asked to buy one of her works.
She has entrusted me with selling them. If you are interested, the price is $50, you can e-mail me at [email protected]. Please do not send any money to Paypal or anywhere else without checking with me first.
First come, first serve.
Gorgeous, The Eagle, The bamboo — I see Bamboo all day long here in So Calif – some grow it as a wall – the bamboo is painted very beautifully.
