Today was shirt dyeing day in the art class at Bishop Maginn High School in Albany, N.Y. Rosaland, a member of the Army Of Good, send a donation to the school funding any art project the students wanted to undertake.
Sue Silverstein put it to a vote and the students voted unanimously to color dye T-shirts for the summer. Sue went out to Wal-Mart and bought 100 shirts and they spend the day designing, dyeing and hanging them.
It was a kind of joyous chaos, and I imagine the janitor must have been cursing Sue when he came in at night (she spent two hours cleaning up after school.) The shirts were riotously colorful and beautiful, the students insisted on making one for me, Maria and Red.
It was great to see these students, mostly refugees, having so much fun doing something creative. I’m going back tomorrow to bring Asher and Issachar some new sneakers and hopefully bring Blue some money to help her buy some badly need personal things.
I’m also going to meet two young women from Myanmar, students at the Hackett Middle School in Albany, they are applying for admission to Bishop Maginn in the fall. They may need some tuition help.
Thanks so much Rosaland, for giving these young refugees such a fun-filled and memorable day. This was a happy classroom all day.
