Bud Meets His Match: The Wily Chipmunk

by Jon Katz

I think Bud might have met his match. A chipmunk popped out of the stone wall near the donkeys’ hay feeder and Bud was on it, he charged the wall barking like the Little King he is, and the chipmunk was very cool, he waited a long time before he darted down the hole.

Bud pounced and bark and stuck his head as far down the hole as he could get it, but no joy. After awhile, he turned away and ran in the other direction. As he turned his head, the chipmunk popped right out again and Bud went roaring back.

There are a lot of ways in and out of that stone wall for a chipmunk, and I have a feeling Bud has met his match. The chipmunk is fast, and appears a bit cheeky. I know nothing about chipmunks, but if a chipmunk could taunt a dog, this one is doing it.

He doesn’t seem as afraid as he probably ought to be. The Little King is stymied.

All day Bud sat on that hole and waited, and if I’m not mistaken, I saw the chipmunk come out on the other side of the wall and go skittering under the pasture fence. I might be mistaken, but I think this chipmunk has seen a few things.

We’ll see what happens in the morning.

  1. Chipmunks do taunt dogs. My Boston, Willow leapt at one . The chipmunk circled around and was literally on the opposite side of the tree. It kept peeking around the tree while Willow was looking in the opposite direction. Finally, the dog gave up
