Rethinking Our Porch (Again)

by Jon Katz

Maria waved her magic wand over the weekend and re-thought our back porch, in many ways the chaotic center of our life her. In the past two years, the porch was used much more by cats and chickens than by us.

We decided to shift the balance, and brought out an old farm table, two chairs and an old blue face with some beautiful Begonias. Maria did all this in a few fevered moments, she sees the world as an art form and is always looking for ways to improve it

The cats have their cushions underneath and to the sides, but we sat out at the table and had lunch today. It was nice, private and lovely, we could look  out at the hills down the road or at our own sheep and donkeys grazing in front of us.

Our farmhouse is a living work, like any gallery, it changes all the time.

  1. I collect quotes that I love and was going through them recently and thought that it fits perfectly with your description in this post about Maria’s way of seeing everything in life as art. I know I have another and I’ll share it when I come across it. I hope you both enjoy: “I think everything in life is art. What you do. How you dress. The way you love someone, and how you talk. Your smile and your personality. What you believe in and all your dreams. The way you drink your tea. How you decorate your home. Your grocery list. The food you make. How your writing looks. And the way you feel. Life is art. ” The quote did not credit an author.
