Video: Come See The “Joy Dog” Run

by Jon Katz

I call Fate the “Joy Dog,” I have never seen a dog having more fun or showing more enthusiasm than Fate has when it comes to running around the sheep. Somewhere along the line, Fate  gave up on the idea of herding the sheep or making them do things, as most border collies do.

It is a pleasure to be around a dog who is so bright, enthusiastic and unique.

I’ve had border collies for 15 years now, and I’ve never had one like this. We love Fate, she is not like the other children, but she is full of energy, joy and enthusiasm. I probably messed up on the herding  training, but if so, it was a good move.

I would hate for Fate to be just like all the other dogs.

We accept her as she is, and it is always fun to see her run. She is the fastest dog I have ever known, clocked at more than 50 miles an hour.

Yesterday, after some time out in the field, I took a video of Fate racing up to the sheep, circling them and coming back to me. She is responsive and very well trained – most of the time.

I took this video for no other reason that it is a blessing to see her run, and people are always asking me for videos showing it. Here is one, enjoy it. I do.

  1. What a terrific outrun! In a way it is too bad she doesn’t know what she goes to the sheep to do!
However, her uniqueness and her obvious pride in a job well done makes it very worthwhile.
Who named Fate? Why was she given this name? An unusual name for an unusual dog.

    1. I think I did. the breeder said it was fated that we get her, the woman who first bought her gave her back, she was too much of a handful…so being crazy we took her and gave her the name “Fate..” We are all unusual up here.

  2. One of the joys of having a dog is being to watch them enjoy being a dog. What a blessing that you allowed Fate to be to be herself.
