Emergency Reading, The Mansion

by Jon Katz

The Mansion was doing heavy work on it’s electrical system, and the power had to be shut off to the residents for six or seven hours. They were not allowed in their rooms from mid-morning to mid-afternoon.

The staff asked if I would come over to the Mansion for an emergency reading, a large number of the residents were sitting outside (on the chairs the Army Of Good bought cushions for).

So we rushed over right after lunch and spent an hour reading.

Maria wanted to come with me, and she read for a half hour, I read after her. It was a beautiful day, sunny, chilly. We read poems, stories about old ladies who kill bad people.

It was a beautiful time, the hard weeks of the evacuation a distant memory. I love reading to the Mansion residents, I’ve never had a more attentive or faithful audience.
