Irresponsible Stacking, Exhibit B

by Jon Katz

Last night, I encountered another example of what I call Irresponsible Stacking, Maria rushed in to do the dishes and left plates and bowls handing upside down.

When I wrote about her Irresponsible Stacking habits, she lashed out, accusing me of being a lousy dishwasher (ouch!) and doubling down on her claim that her stacking is really sculpture, a carefully designed and aesthetically compelling work of art.

I was, she said, simply too clueless to get it.

If we sacrifice some plates and glasses sometimes, she says, then so what? Art is art.

Many of you took her side, men are not especially popular these days I heard a lot of stories of similar battles raging in kitchens all across the country.

But as you can see, these dishes are stacked in a way that is certain to fall, it’s like Pick-up Sticks, take one plate out and the rest collapse, some onto the floor.

Fortunately, I had my Iphone handy and got a photo before she dry them or re-arrange them to look even more artsy. I rushed over to put the plates away and straightenΒ  out the dishes several were on the edge and teetering. Maria asks why I am washing to many dishes these days, I don’t dare tell her it’s to save them.

  1. Geez Jon, I’m pretty anal about things like dish stacking and I think this work of Maria’s looks well organized and even safe. I’m offering one for Maria. I think she’ll win this one. Sorry. Oh, and I love the purple colander and the way it sits atop and next to the yellow dishes. Maybe I’m blinded by the great colors.

    1. Actually, the plate was hanging over the side, and did fall…but I’m not losing sleep over it..

  2. Jon, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the way these dishes are positioned! πŸ˜‰ This is how they ALL drain the best! I especially love the purple collander which is placed at exactly the correct angle so that all the nooks and crannies of its shape drain efficiently. Sorry, you’re out-voted (at least by me and Maria!). Cheer up, oh grumpy one! This is one ‘battle’ I don’t think you’ll ever win! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  3. Yeah this would drive me crazy but…I’ve been guilty of making a mess like this too.
My husband is a retired Episcopal priest and whenever he had an altar set for Communion service it was like the way the army makes beds. Not a thing out of place. But to this day the man is unable to make a bed on a daily basis! It is what it is.

  4. A bigger dish drainer, or two of them would help a great deal. Mine looks like a junk pile and is piled high as nothing hardly ever gets put away. Too much stuff in a too small house.
I, too love the looks of the purple strainer, very pretty. I wish that I could get my husband to do the dishes. He always says that I need to tell him to wash them. He doesn’t even see them soaking in the sink. He has ADD and gets very upset when he doesn’t have a place to put the dishes. It’s just easier if I do them as I’m more creative when it comes to finding a place to put them…

  5. You guys are so cute. If this is the most serious thing you can disagree about, you are truly blessed.

  6. Those dishes look just fine to me. I am always stacking dishes worse than that and they fall on the floor or on the cat’s heads who are waiting for something below. So they break. So what.

  7. Sorry, Jon. I think Maria’s stacking method is a deal-breaker, especially now that I see your comment that one of the plates fell later. I don’t see this marriage surviving. Cut your losses & end it. She’s adorable & all, but this is a bridge too far.
