Big Sky Sunsets. Lovely, But Only Part Of The Story

by Jon Katz

I’m addicted to photographing sunrises and sunsets, especially in the very few places where there is a big sky. I know of only a few, and I have taken pictures at all of them.

Photography in the country has become something of a tiresome cliche. When city people like me come here we are all drawn to pretty much the same thing – cows, pastures, barns.

There is almost no photographic equivalent her of the urban street photographers, perhaps the most creative photographers left in the world. I miss the grit and character of city photography, and I am also drawn to color and light and emotion of big sky landscapes.

I want to do more, to capture the true flavor of rural life which isn’t pretty farms and skies, but hallowed out cities and towns, dying farms, angry, poor and sometimes embittered people.

There hardly are any young people left in rural America, they have all fled to the dreary but better paying jobs of the cities.

I don’t mean to say everyone here is like that, they aren’t, but the abandonment of rural America is evident everywhere and you don’t see it in pretty landscapes and stories about wandering cows and ponds.

I have tried to capture that reality from town to town, I want to get back to it. I loved taking pictures in Glens Falls. I don’t want my photography to be a cliche, the thing every city refugee does.

My portraits feel read to me, I love shooting portraits.

In the meantime, I don’t think I can ever give on images of morning and evening – like the one above. Or of the animals on the farm.

    1. Thanks Debbie, they were the beginning of my photography, I will never forget standing at the bottom of that road with Izzy, I was such a wreck, but they grounded me, they were full of emotion, as I was..

  1. I remember the photos you took on Kinney Road, too: beautiful shots of the fantastic skies in your area. In this one, you’ve captured that and the implied adventure of the road’s moving toward the horizon. This one should go up for sale.
