Caring For Old Sheep

by Jon Katz

Griselle and Zelda are too think, we saw it clearly after the shearing, and Liz Willis, the shearer, saw it too. Zelda has lost almost all of her front  teeth, to it’s hard for her to grind the hay.

We are giving her grain once a day, a tricky process that involves getting all the sheep into the pole Barn, but ending up just with Griselle and Zelda. They are figuring out the drill, and hold back when others scoot out under pressure from Red.

Griselle has her  teeth, but is very old. She came to us as a battered and ignored animal, she was thin even then, about four years ago. I think Zelda will be fine for awhile, she is fattening up already.

I think this is Griselle’s last season on the earth, we may spare her another winter.
