Biddie, The Shearer Is Coming For You All In The Morning

by Jon Katz

Biddie has no idea that she will be much cooler and lighter tomorrow morning, Liz Lewis, our shearer from Vermont is coming at 8 a.m. I’ll have some coffee warmed up and ready.

We have ten sheep to shear, and within a week, we’ll be driving it up to the Vermont Knitting Mill so it can be converted into wool of many colors.

Liz will trim the hooves as well as take off the heavy winter coat. It look like Maria will have some beautiful wool to bring up North. It is amazing to watch Liz work, she’s been shearing sheep since she was eight, working with Jim McRae, who retired from shearing last year.

This is a precious ritual for us, one of the many reasons we love living on a farm. We have to get up real early to get the sheep into the Pole Barn, I hope Red is up to it, if not we’ll use grain, like everybody else.

We first need to get the donkeys into the side pasture, so they’ll be out of the way, and then get the sheep into the Pole Barn. It should be simple, but it never is.

See you in the morning Biddie, bright and early.
