Listen In: Podcast Trial Session: Maria And Jon

by Jon Katz

As you know perhaps, Maria and I are starting our own Bedlam Farm podcast (name suggestions are welcome, we haven’t settled on a title yet). We were asked to chat a bit as a trial so the tech people can figure out sound levels, etc. So we did our first trial Saturday morning on zoom.com. It was easy, and our Shure microphone worked well.

We do ask for and welcome your feedback (we don’t promise to follow it) so feel free to tell us what you think of this first effort: [email protected], [email protected]

As we say in this audio strip, the podcast will be free, weekly and will cover our lives together – the farm, the dogs or other animals, our creativity. Like our blogs, it will be authentic and unedited or filtered.

We hope you like it, we are serious about doing it well. FIrst effort is below.

  1. I like the casual context of this run. You both have great voices for this and you have so many interesting things to tell. Looking forward to future Podcasts! Good luck on this new adventure.

  2. Congrats! Podcasts are great; I listen to them while I work. Something about listening to people talk while I’m crunching numbers helps keep me focused and helps pass the time. When I am home I like watching podcasts on YouTube. Even though it’s just watching people talk, it is interesting to me.
Love listening to both you & Maria! Cheers!

  3. You KNOW you’re going to get inundated with music suggestions! ๐Ÿ™‚
    How about:
    Waltz of the Flowers
Teddy Bears’ Picnic (sung by Anne Murray)
    Waltz No. 2 by Shastakovich
    Some uplifting belly dancing music
And The Waltz Goes On by Anthony Hopkins
    etc., etc., etc., ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. My border collie bolted out of her bed and rushed over to me when she heard Budโ€™s squeaky toy.
Great sound quality, so looking forward to this podcast!
    Love you two.

  5. A podcast seems like the next logical step in growing your life – such a good idea and one that you and Maria should both do well with. BLENDED BEDLAM would be my thought for your title. It would suggest how farm life blends perfectly into your creative life, how your beloved pets blend perfectly with your farm animals, and how your random thoughts will blend into the lives and thoughts of those who will hear you each week. Wishing you well on this latest adventure…

  6. I loved your podcast. I enjoyed the banter between the two of you and all the extraneous sounds in the background. It was very relaxed, like we were sitting in your living room having a conversation . Not at all scripted. I am looking forward to future podcasts. You guys are naturals!

  7. This is fantastic Jon and Maria! Very clear and easy to listen to. I’m sure it will be a hit.
You are so right about the income thing. I make very little money, etc. and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I guess the old adage applies: If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.

    1. Thanks Penni, I love my radio show, but the future of it is not in my hands. The station is broke and woefully understaffed, and I expect one day I’ll have no choice but to move on. In the meantime, I’ll keep it going as long as I can. I won’t lie to you, I expect the podcast will replace it one day, community radio is in dire trouble in America. The podcast will also be accessible anywhere in the world.

      1. Thanks Jon, and unfortunately I understand. The podcast will be good, you and Maria have lots to talk about. And your chemistry together is obvious. I like the intelligent and thoughtful why you discuss matters. I also like the care you both have for others. So good luck!

  8. Great listening! You both sound great and your interaction is wonderful. I love it when Maria calls in to your radio show so the podcast is such a natural extension. How about Katz and Wulf Creative Bedlam for a name? Might help draw listeners not already familiar with you two. Looking forward to listening!

  9. how can you resist a play on wulf and katz…. cats and wolf….. but two humans who love animals with animal last names? wow1

  10. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to the two of you, even if this was a “practice” session. Will be looking forward to the next podcast.

You were talking about creativity and something stood out to me, about how you (two) might influence and encourage the creativity of others, through your art(s). I truly believe that what you do is to put your art “out there” and it ripples like a stone thrown into water. Residents in the Mansion are participating in endeavors that would have been denied them, without your presence. They meditate, write, draw, interact, and think. And sing, and act. And they share with each other, and with us, your audience.

People who buy your art are encouraged to find ways for its display and for its uses. People who read your books are entertained and changed in the ways that they interact with animals, and with other people. Your photographs (both of you!) prod our thinking and our perceptions of what we think we see.

Imagine two stones thrown into a pond and the beautiful overlapping that happens and spreads into the distance corners.

    Thank you both!

  11. As one who’s followed this blog since its beginning, I can testify to how much you and your talent have grown over the past 12 years. In the beginning, there were synopses of events with still photos of your animals, flowers, landscapes, nature, houses, etc.), but now your writing has personality, your photos have become spectacular, and we get to see your daily lives as you live them. You’ve shared with us those whom you help so fervently and beautifully (The Mansion residents; refugees; and others). I predict this podcast will be a big success, too; hearing you and Maria is wonderful and you’re so natural and easy to listen to. I’m glad you’ve decided to present it and look forward to each one. You may be poor in money, but you have the biggest riches of all in making this a better world by your actions, and that will bring you happiness in itself. Bravo!

  12. Love the sample Podcast. You and Maria sound great and interact so well – very enjoyable. I’ll definitely be listening. Now, for a name…how about ‘Pure Bedlam’ ? ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Hi Jon…. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to you and Mariaโ€™s podcast. Hi am hard of hearing along with having a hard time understanding people. Well….. I could hear and understand everything you two said. I canโ€™t say this happens very often for me. Jon, you have a deep voice that resonates nicely. And Mariaโ€™s diction is very easy to catch. Thanks guys… I am looking forward listening to more…. Rebecca in Lake Country Georgia…..
