I call it our Little Free Library our “Godlibrary.”
More than a year ago we drove past this Little Free Library in Arlington, Vt. and it inspired us to build our own Little Free Library (actually our friend Jay Bridge built it for free) on our front lawn.
It has been a great success, people stop all the time to take the books we put in home, and quite often, they replace our books with theirs. I especially love to see kids get out the cars and rush up to the library and take some books out or put some in.
This is a wonderful way to love and share books and also love and build community.
The Little Free Library program, started by a son who wanted to honor his late mother, a librarian, started in the South and the Midwest and has more than 50,000 little libraries scattered across the country, On their website, the libraries are listed by geographic location so that travelers and neighbors can find them and get a book to read.
The idea is simple, you take a book and when you can, you leave a book. Maria has been taking and leaving books for more than a year (I confess, as an author, I buy my books mostly new in stores and sometimes on Amazon).
But I love the Free Library idea and I put almost all of the books I read in there, including some of my own.
This morning, Maria and I woke up and decided to stay in bed late. We both got up, did the chores quickly and came back to sleep. Then, after dozing and reading together, we both agreed we needed to eat pancakes on this windy and stormy date. The near hysterical weather wind alerts say it will start at 7 p.m.
We will all be here in the morning, if not much sooner. On the way to Chauncey’s for our pancakes (which were delicious) Maria stopped to get a book of short stories. The wind has started picking up. Donkeys and sheep don’t like wind. The wind alert doesn’t end until tomorrow evening.
The house across the road is a gorgeous backdrop.
