Red is failing, and I don’t let him run around with the sheep any longer, it could dislodge the fractured part of his spine and leave him paralyzed. But that doesn’t mean he can’t work, we go out to the sheep two or three times a day, and Red takes up position, keeps an eye on things. This helps him to stay grounded and feel useful, important things for a border collie.
I never imagined Bud, a feisty two-year-old Boston Terrier, would be a part of Red’s life and work, but Bud loves Red and has taken on the task of watching over him and keeping the sheep away. Yesterday, one of the Romney’s tried to butt Bud, who was startled, back up and then charged right at her.
He got in her face, barked three times, and backed her up. This dog is fearless and has great poise and confidence. He is so small, yet none of the sheep will really challenge or defy him. In his own quiet way, Red is very happy to have this new friend, he completely trust and accepts Bud and his attention.
What would we all give to have a friend as Bud is to Red. It is a gift of a lifetime.
So Red now has his own service dog….
Animals are wonderful!!
