Ever since Red got sick a month or so ago, Bud has been tethered to him. He sleeps near  him, curled up in a bill. He guards him in the pasture, he lies next to Red under the table in my office, the two of them are there together every time I write.

I am deeply touched by Bud’s loyalty and his love for Red, he is his guardian and protector, and Red, who always kept to himself, seems to love  Bud and fully accept his friendship.

Red is failing, his heart is fading and he has a severe spinal injury that sometimes paralyzes  him.

I don’t know how much time he has left, I don’t care to guess.

I offer this photo in honor of friendship and loyalty, two of humanity’s most precious gifts, and dogs most enduring traits.
