Free At Last

by Jon Katz

The past two days were warm, and much of the heavy snow has melted. The pasture is a mud bog, so is our back yard, but at least the animals could get out into the back pasture and graze a bit. When I came out to walk a bit with Red, the sheep and the donkeys saw us, and ever hopeful for a treat or hay, they paraded slowly and with some majesty up the hill. The donkeys eat got some alfalfa cookies in exchange, I threw some dry old hay out for the sheep. They were very happy with it. Scenes like this lift my heart.

  1. It’s not fair! I’m pouting right now. Some of your snow has melted and grass is visible. Old, dead, brown grass, but grass all the same. In Edmonton it’s -30 Celsius and deep snow everywhere. The only grass is what we see on TV. I am officially jealous?

    1. It’s an odd thought, people being jealous of upstate NY, but I get your point..we do see grass, but it’s freezing a gain, but not – 30 Celsius//stay warm..

  2. Beautiful! I feel like I’m right there and the animals are coming to me. What a momentary gift for those of us who live in an urban area!
