This image was special for me, it spoke of a critical element of discernment, it captured what I think of as the Present Moment. It is important in the context of a spiritual life. I try not to run from my pain or dwell on the past.
I work actively to keep my mind and heart it the present moment, just as Red does and most dogs do. Perhaps this is one reason why they are so important to us.
In the present moment, I am never alone, I am never lonely or afraid.
This is Red’s life now, he can no longer chase after the sheep or battle a ram. He enters the pasture, takes up his position and enters the moment. This is enough for him, he does not complain about what he can’t do, or worry about what he might do next.
He is in the moment, one of the most powerful exercises of discernment. From the first, Red was an inspiration to me, he is the Prince of Acceptance. He does what he can as well as he can for as long as he can.
Sweet sweet Red. He’s the best.
What a precious way to maintain his dignity. He is indeed special.
