The Little Dog That Could. And Did.

by Jon Katz

Okay, so in the pasture this afternoon, Susie and the sheep were starting to move towards Red and the gate Red is blind in one eye now, and the sheep seem to be picking up on that – border collies herd with their eyes.

But, who is about one tenth the size of Susie, if not more, just went nose-to-nose with her and said “stop,”, she did seem to meet his gaze, but then turned and she and the other sheep went back to their feeder. I would be lying if I told you I understood what was happening – I don’t.

Bud doesn’t move the sheep around or herd them in regular sense, he doesn’t get them from one place to another like border collies do, I have the sense he is protecting Red, whose vision is impaired.

That’s the best I can do, and it is quite a sight to see. We are all a little slack-jawed watching, Red too, I think. I see why they call Boston Terriers “Irish Terrors” in Boston. They have plenty of spunk and confidence, and perhaps that is sometimes good enough.

  1. As you’ve said, sheep aren’t very bright. Perhaps Bud learned from Red how to do The Look: looks like Bud’s got it down. The sheep are apparently not smart enough to figure out they could stomp a Boston Terrier – all they know is a wolf-like creature, which is what any dog is, has them at bay. Let’s hope they keep that impression. You’ve got, if not a sheep-herding Boston Terrier, a sheep-holding Little Bastard.
