Bob, Fate and Bud At The Dump. Angels in Recycling…

by Jon Katz

On Saturday afternoons, we pack our garbage into the car, and tell Fate and Bud they are going to the dump. There is joyous barking and wiggling and excitement. Bob is a true animal lover, and Fate and Bud love him dearly.

They leap into the car and start squealing and quivering, I open the side windows about halfway down and get out and start unloading the garbage and recycling.  Bob comes out of the small office where he collects the fees for using the recycling center.

The dogs stare eagerly out the window, their tails going furiously now, there some squealing. Once Bob sees the car, he comes out with some biscuits in his hand. One to Fate, one to Bug. Then he and Fate do some smuggling.

I can hardly think of going to the dump without taking Fate and Bud, Bob would never forgive me. He gives each one a biscuit or two, he cuddles with Fate and rubs noses with Bud. Bob will not let me carry a garbage can since my Open Heart Surgery. He blows off my protests.

Bob is a really good man, an angel with a strong and giving heart.

  1. You can always spot a dog lover on the road in the middle of winter. The driver is all bundled up but the back windows are partially rolled down. Inside the car, the heater is going full blast because the windows have to stay open so the dogs can stick their heads out. Crazy humans? They only appear so to a non-dog owner. Other owners consider the behavior perfectly normal.

  2. Was I neurotic by not letting my dogs hang out the moving car window, for fear a flying insect would find an eye? Thanks Jon.

    1. I can’t answer that for you, Brenda, I do let my dogs hang out of the window sniffing the breeze…It’s an ancient part of being a dog for me, but we each have to make our own choices, ues?
