Bud Steps In To Help Red Work

by Jon Katz

(This message is brought to you from my three day retreat to focus on my book. It will self-destruct in seconds.)

I never think I know what is going on in a dog’s mind, but I do know what the camera captures and photos don’t lie. Red is on limited duty, he can approach the sheep and lie down, but no running or active  herding.

Somehow, Bud, who adores Red and  has been by his side every since he got sick, picked up on this in some dog way, and has been stepping out in front of Red, barking and helping out keeping the sheep in line.

The sheep mostly stare at him in bewilderment, but they don’t challenge him either, the way they challenge Fate. I don’t quite understand how all of this is happening but this is not what Bud usually does, and Red seems quite at ease with it.

It looks like Bud is trying to help Red do his work.

Back to the retreat.

    1. Bud is fine outside in the cold, when he’s had enough he goes to the door and we let him in…So far, he doesn’t even shiver out there…

  1. I think Bud is doing just what it looks like he’s doing. 🙂 Like my 12 pound Papillon who (sometimes vociferously) controls a pack of (my own) two 75 pound pit bulls and five fosters ranging in age from 3 months to 11 months. Somehow they all communicate and somehow everyone knows his or her own place. Just as the sheep in your pasture have one relationship with Red, another with Fate…and another with Bud. Like you, I find these relationships a joy to watch and sometimes difficult to understand.
