The Mansion, The Comfort Dolls

by Jon Katz

Today, I ran into Ellen, showing her new comfort doll to Diane, who was one of the first residents at the Mansion to receive a comfort doll, a life-like toy doll made to look like a real baby.

This doll has transformed Ellen’s life, and also be a tremendous help to Diane. It has given both of them a much-needed focus, a chance to nurture, and something in common with other residents.

Diane’s doll was napping in her room, Ellen generously let her holdĀ  her doll, and they both talked about how much they loved these babies, real or not.

I have become a huge fan of these dolls, as has the Mansion staff. Tomorrow, I bring cookies and buttons to the aides.

Next week, I’ll do another reading of Christmas stories. We’ve scheduled another Karaoke sing before Christmas on the 28th, Lo Ann Sanders and her fellow angels are bringing punch and cookies.

On Christmas morning, I’ll be there with Maria to read some Christmas stories and play some Christmas music. I think some of the dolls will be there as well.
