The Orange Fish: A Meditation

by Jon Katz

I am spending a few minutes a day watching our Orange Fish, she is a kind of meditation all of her own.

She is peaceful and focused, she sometimes floats high up in the tank, sometimes, vanishes in the thicket of natural plants along the bottom. She is calming, she moves gracefully. She is a simple fish, living the simplest of lives.

I watch her to see if I can get to know her, if she has a distinct personality, if she has moods or entertainments. Sometimes she floats with our other two fish, mostly she cruises back and forth. I am figuring out how to photograph her.

She is, for me, a meditation.

  1. I love this photo, Jon! I also have goldfish, 2 that are in a 5 gallon tank on our kitchen counter. I find them to be very interactive and curious as to what is going on in the kitchen at any given time….and I also find them to be quite meditative!
