Red’s Update: Bud Stays Close: 11/29/81

by Jon Katz

It seems that every time I look up, Bud is lying next to Red, curled up alongside of him, resting his head on Red’s paws. Red completely accepts Bud’s affection and attention.

These two have been close since Bud arrived, but it seemed to me, Bud sensed Red’s pain and confusion right away and has been worried about him ever since.

I don’t know what dogs think, but Bud’s concern for Red is moving and palpable.

Ever since Red got sick, Bud has practically fastened himself to him. He curls up with him, showers him with licks, leans against him for warmth, or perhaps to offer support. Red accepts all of this.

I think Red is having a difficult time again. He ate little of his food, and when I took him out for a walk, he was struggling so much I just brought him back home. He manages to lie behind me or next to me, but apart from that, he doesn’t move much.

He does not look well to me. We’ll keep him resting and quiet, and just hope for the better. I am surprised at Bud’s devotion, he he is a dog with a big heart.

He kind of adopted Red from the moment he arrived. Thanks for all of your good wishes and thoughts, I believe they have helped.  I am grateful.

  4. Oh, Jon, what I feel when I look at the picture of Bud and Red can’t even be put into words. How fortunate you and Maria are to be able to bear witness to the relationship between the two of them. Red is such a beautiful Border Collie as is Fate and Bud’s expression says “love”. It’s so easy looking in Red’s kind eyes why he brings so much comfort to Mansion residents. I can tell that you are treasuring every moment. Your words are powerful.
