Donkey Chess

by Jon Katz

It’s time for donkey chess. With the snow on the ground, the donkeys are unable to graze. So they’ve begun eating the new Pole Barn gate. Yesterday, Ray Telford came over to put chicken wire on both sides, the inside of the barn is now shrouded in chicken wire.

We’ve important toys, balls, logs, mineral blocks. But the donkeys only like doing things we don’t want them to do, that is donkey chess They make a move, we make a move.

I jeered at them this morning in the pasture, “we’ve got you now” I yelled, but Lulu and Fanny just looked at me, I could swear they were smiling.

Their move.

  1. Put large chunks of dry fire wood preferably hemlock on the ground for their addiction. you may have to anchor them in place somehow. Out smart and distract somehow. Don’t defend.

  2. I sometimes mock my goats. “I’ve got you outsmarted now!” They look at me with innocent faces like naughty children playing a favorite game. Then the next day they outsmart me. It is humbling but kind of fun too.
