Invitation: Sylvie Singing In Church Tonight

by Jon Katz

Sylvie is a Jehovah’s Witness, and she has been asked to sing a Christmas song in church tonight. She invited me to come and hear her sing. I don’t know if photographs are allowed during services, if so I’ll take a picture.

This is important to Sylvie, she’s been rehearsing all week, and she asked me to sit next to her, I suspect she’s a bit nervous. There is a lot of snow and ice out there tonight, but so far, the service has not been cancelled.

Sylvie is almost always cold, and she has some remarkable clothing combinations to keep her warm. She is one of my favorite portrait subjects (this photo taken by my new (old) portrait lens.

Sylvie loves to get letters. You can write her c/o Sylvie, The Mansion, 11 South Union Avenue, Cambridge, N.Y., 12816.

  1. I was one for 7 years and they do not.
The song “Oh, Holy Night” is acceptable, as I recall, because it isn’t about Christmas per se.
But in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter. She doing something that makes her happy.

    1. I just came from the meeting, and they don’t celebrate holidays or birthdays too commercial. THey were lovely to me and to Sylvie, I enjoyed the evening. Finally met the Watchtower People..It was all about scripture and conversion…
