The Mansion: Sylvie And Her Parakeets. And Socks.

by Jon Katz

Sylvie asked me to get her some writing paper. I’m looking for some. Peggie, fresh from her  cruise to Cuba, needs some special compression socks.

She hates black socks. Wayne needs some large print books.

I’ve made arrangements to buy or order all of these things. None of them are expensive, and I have enough money to cover the purchases, thank to some big-hearted souls in the Army Of Good.

Small acts of great kindness. They add up, ripples out into the world.

I almost always try to buy one of the things myself, out of my own money, so I’m not asking anyone to do anything I wouldn’t also do.  I bought the socks myself and the Karaoke Music DVD’s.

The socks were $27 for 7 pairs and after rooting around, I got some multi-colored socks, which Peggie loves. I am getting very good at shopping for older women with various needs and sizes and tastes.

I have enough money in the fund to get the writing paper  and the large print books. And good large print books are not easy to find.

When I saw Sylvie she was writing a letter to one of her pen pals talking about the parakeets and how much she loves to sit and listen to them chirp. When the parakeet died a few weeks ago, the other one – she calls her Pushkin – stopped singing.

Now that there are two, both are singing now, and Sylvie says that makes her very happy.
