We went to Post Office in Cambridge, N.Y., this morning and were delighted to see Wendy, our much loved postal clerk (or sales associate, as they now say) in her wings and green wig.
She was impressive. I learned something about the New Halloween this week. Only the news is allowed to scary. At Rite-Aide,the post office and other public places, scary is forbidden – not politically correct to frighten people.
Workers facing the public can wear football jerseys, or wigs, even wings, but no vampires or ghouls in costume any more. Halloween has been corporatized and sanitized.
Only the news can be truly frightening, every day of the year is Halloween on cable news. She is friendly, courteous and efficient, she makes buying stamps a pleasure. And Maria does so much shipping Wendy is practically part of the family.
Still, Wendy looked great, and she is great. It was a lot of fun seeing her. Everybody left the post office with a smile.
