Vol. 11, Bud And I Dancing Together. Stay, Good Boy!

by Jon Katz

But and are hitting the sweet spot in our training. We have another work or so to work daily on the “stay” command, I’m continuing work on our recall, which is very good. Next, we’ll take up “lie down,” which I expect will be difficult.

Proper training brings dog and human closer together, and it has been strengthening my relationship with Bud to work with him. He is no longer afraid of sudden movements, is paying closer attention, his attention span is lengthening, he is more relaxed out in the pasture.

This is great progress for a week-and-a-half.

Moving here was a huge, even traumatic jump for Red, who had never been trained, was not housebroken, had recently been neutered and was essentially abandoned into an open metal pen by his first owner. He nearly died there.

This training work has helped acclimate him to us, to the farm, to our lives here. Training is not about obedience, it is about communication.

It was a good idea to train him out there, dogs whizzing by, sheep and donkeys close. He is learning a command from chatter and one reason is that I am using very few words, a key to training. Thanks for coming along, I’ll continue to record our training work.
