Working Dogs, Bedlam Style

Working Dogs, Bedlam Style

I guess this is not a photo I expected to take on Bud’s second day at Bedlam Farm, but then when I think about it, it shouldn’t surprise me. I seem to draw remarkable dogs, and I wish I could take credit for it, but I can’t.

I had nothing to do with the first months and years of Red and  Bud’s life, but i am reaping the rewards. I think Bud is auditioning for our Open House this weekend, he loves being out with Red, he barks at the sheep for good measure and is adopting Fate’s style of herding. – run fast but don’t actually try to make the sheep do anything.

Bud is in the Open House shepherding demo, I didn’t imagine he would be part of the show, but he is great out there. He will be part of the Open House sheepherding this weekend.

But absolutely loves to run, something he never got to do in his former life, and he is fearless but also savvy.

He also makes sure to stay near Red, even so far as standing over  him. I’m not sure if he is hiding behind Red or trying to protect him. Red is a saint, he is so accepting and welcoming and gracious. He makes Bud feel safe and welcome, and he tolerates his occasional insanity.

I think Bud is having something of a Czechoslovakian Spring

The donkeys are incredulous, and the sheep just seem astonished. We’ve got ourselves a farm dog, and a joyous dog. But is learning how to have some fun, it is a joy to watch. Every day he surprises me, we’re going back to the Mansion for some training today.

Bud is a smart dog, and very savvy. He never gets too close to the sheep or the donkeys, but he can’t wait to come out into the pasture. He even had his first taste of sheep poop, and he liked it. Surprisingly, he is more active in the pasture than Gus and is a curious blend of caution and confidence.

I have the feeling he is just beginning to feel his oats. I love this picture.
