We are still working to adjust to the news that Gus has the “dread” Megeasophagus disease, he has an enlarged esophagus which is sometimes blocking the flow of food into his digestive system. We have switched foods, squirt medicine down his throat, we are feed him standing up (he loves to stand on his hind legs and eat his food that way) and holding him upright for five to ten minutes after he eats.
The disease (it is not a breeding issue, none of his siblings or mother and have megaesophagus) causes the dog to regurgitate, rather than digest, his foo. We had no regurgitation incidents for two days, but several this morning.
It’s hard to be sure why. I saw him eating snow and other things this morning, he could also be reacting to the drastic change in food. We’ll talk to our vet in a couple of days. This problem is not a black-and-white up or down thing.
Treatment is varied and complex, and veterinarians have no idea what the cause of megaesophagus is. So we have a lot to learn and a lot of things to try. This afternoon, and so far this evening, Gus is doing better. One day at a time.
On a bright note, he loves the snow, loves to tunnel through it and run around in circles. He seems to have no need of a sweater yet, but i did order soft shoes for him since the temperature this week will drop below zero in the morning and at night.
I am sorry to hear this Jon…but I know you and Maria will give him the best of care.
