We celebrated the coming of Fall, my favorite season, today. We dug up the Three Sisters garden, or rather, I should say Maria did, along with a curious canine audience. We had a tractor come and double the size of the garden, and we duped a ton of year-old donkey manure in.
Today, Maria dug out the roots and spread the manure around, it’s ready for the cold weather. The Three Sisters garden is important to us, it is full of symbolism and history, it symbolizes women’s commitment to one another.
I say we dug up the garden, but the truth is that I really couldn’t be of much help. Because of some of the heart medications I take, I can’t be out in the strong sun for very long, and I got up on a ladder this morning and cleared out all of the gutter leaves. That was about all the chores my legs could take today, I’m afraid.
The garden was not as productive as it was last year, so we made some changes. We did have a bountiful supply of zucchini.
I will say it made me a bit sad. This is something I hate to give up working on, we dug it together, although I didn’t do much then either. I accept where I am and am learning what I can and can’t do. So I sat and stood with the dogs and watched, until the bugs got to me. When it is warm and humid as it is today, they swarm, although it doesn’t seem to bother Maria.
She loves gardening and physical labor. Acceptance. I am happy for Fall, it is the season of change, my change, and we are as ready for winter as any farm can be.
