Our Back Porch

by Jon Katz
Minnie And The Gray Hen

When Minnie came to us as a feral kitten, she was rarely seen, she lived in the big Bedlam Farm with the chickens, and has always been comfortable around them. The gray hen is slowly dying, she is almost never away from Minnie. I think Minnie protects her from the other chickens who can be vicious to sick hens.

Almost all flocking animals drive off or kill their sick comrades, it is not because they are cruel, rather that they know sick animals draw predators and endanger the flock or the herd.

This is why Simon attacked Rocky, the blind pony so intensely. This morning, the brown hen appeared to stand with the two of the for a few minutes, the gray hen doesn’t much that much any longer. Our back porch is a living window into our lives on the farm.

  1. Oh, I have always loved your beautiful Minnie!
I am always hoping you will offer a photo of her for sale either on line or at an Open House. The composition in this photo epitomizes for me the kindness, compassion, and inclusiveness which lies at the core of Bedlam Farm,
